Junior Justice

Building Understanding. Preventing Harm. Empowering Youth.
Junior Justice is an interactive education program that brings age-appropriate mock trials into elementary school classrooms, giving young people a clear, honest introduction to how the justice system works — and how it impacts real lives. We believe that knowledge is a powerful form of prevention. When children understand their rights, responsibilities, and the consequences of decisions early on, they are better equipped to navigate the world safely and confidently. Our goal is simple: arm young people with information so fewer of them ever enter the system in the first place.

What Is Junior Justice?

Junior Justice transforms complex legal concepts into engaging, kid-friendly experiences. Through guided mock trials, students take on roles such as judges, jurors, attorneys, and witnesses. They learn by doing — asking questions, weighing evidence, and practicing critical thinking in a supportive environment.
The program is designed specifically for elementary-age students, using developmentally appropriate language, scenarios, and discussion to ensure learning is accessible, empowering, and never intimidating. Our executive board member, Jessica San Luis, brings decades of experience within the justice system and a love for educating youth to the table with her unique, focused and compelling project designed to bring clarity and understanding to the complex world of juvenile justice.

Why It Matters

Many young people encounter the justice system without understanding how it works — or how easily everyday choices can have lasting consequences. Early education helps change that.
Junior Justice helps students:

Understand basic legal conceptsand courtroom roles

Learn about fairness, accountability, and due process

Develop critical thinking and communication skills

Build awareness of rights and responsibilities

See the justice system as something they can understand — not fear

By meeting kids where they are, we reduce misinformation, challenge harmful myths, and encourage thoughtful decision-making long before mistakes turn into consequences.

Our Belief

We believe prevention starts with education — not punishment.
We believe kids deserve honesty, not fear-based messaging.
And we believe empowered youth build safer, stronger communities.
Junior Justice is one small but powerful way to break cycles before they begin.

How the Program Works

Each Junior Justice session is facilitated by trained educators and tailored to the classroom’s grade level. Lessons include:
* An introduction to the justice system and its purpose
* A structured, age-appropriate mock trial
* Guided discussion and reflection
* Opportunities for students to ask questions and share perspectives
The program aligns with educational standards and complements social studies, civics, and social-emotional learning goals.
